2021 NEBC College Prep Champions

by Skip McCarty

The Minutemen 18U team came into the weekend with an undefeated record.  But as the playoffs loomed, the chances of the team completing their last fall league as champions would dwindle in the Finals, that was until Evan O'Rourke stepped to the plate.  Trailing the Mountaineers in the 6th inning of the 7 inning Championship Game, it was O'Rourke who clobbered a fastball for a 3 run Home Run (his 3rd HR of the day) to give the Minutemen a chance.  Later in the inning, with Brendan Flynn on 3rd, Teddy McCafferty would hit a ground ball in the infield that when the Mountaineers threw home, Flynn showed some nifty moves around the catcher to score the deciding run.  Zach Zimmerman would get the save in the 7th, although it took another heroic play by O'Rourke, who while fully extend made a diving catch to end the game.  Without the catch, 2 runners would have scored and given the Mountaineers the lead.  Instead, it was the 18u Minutemen who captured their 2nd Fall Title at NEBC in 2 years.  Congratulations to Coach Freire and team on completing the Fall with an 8-0 record and a Championship.
